Frequently asked questions

Which calculator should I start with?

It depends on where you are. If you're still planning a flock, start with the Coop Size Calculator and the First-Year Cost Calculator to size your setup and budget. If your birds are already laying, the Egg Production and Feed Cost calculators are the most useful day to day. New to hatching? Begin with the Incubation Calendar.

Are the estimates accurate for my breed and climate?

They are solid planning estimates, not exact guarantees. Each calculator adjusts for the big variables like breed size, climate, age, and confinement, but your real results will still vary with feed quality, season, and how you manage your flock. Use the number as a starting point and adjust from what you observe. Where authorities give a range, we show the range rather than a single false-precise figure.

Do ducks, quail, and turkeys need different calculators than chickens?

Yes, and that is why they are separate. Space, feed, and egg figures differ a lot by species: a duck eats more and needs more room than a chicken of similar weight, while quail need only a fraction of the space. Using a chicken calculator for quail or ducks would give misleading numbers, so each species has tools built around its own requirements.
