Chicken manure as fertilizer — the basics
Chicken manure is one of the richest organic fertilizers available, with higher nitrogen content than cattle or horse manure. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, and trace minerals. The catch: fresh chicken manure is too strong to apply directly to plants. It will burn roots and may contain pathogens (Salmonella, E. coli) that require heat from composting to neutralize.
A note on the figures here. Manure output varies more than most calculators admit — feed, breed, and bedding all shift it, so treat these numbers as a realistic range rather than a single tidy figure. How chicken manure compares to other manures
The reason chicken manure is prized in the garden is nitrogen density. Here is how finished composted manures compare by NPK (nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium):

Fresh chicken manure tests lower than the composted figure, closer to 1.1-0.8-0.5, because composting concentrates nutrients as the bulk breaks down. The higher the nitrogen, the more carefully it has to be aged or composted before it touches a growing plant.

The composting timeline
Hot composting (active pile you turn regularly): 60 to 90 days. Reaching a high temperature once is not enough to sanitize a pile — it must hold 130 to 140°F for at least two five-day heating cycles, turning between them, to kill pathogens and weed seeds (UConn). This is the fastest and most reliable method.
Cold composting (passive pile): 6 to 12 months. Less work but slower. A cold pile rarely gets hot enough to sanitize, so give it the full year and still observe the harvest-interval rules below for anything that touches the soil.
Curing. After the active hot phase, let the compost cure for two to four months before putting it on food crops. Curing finishes the breakdown and completes pathogen destruction; compost used straight off a hot pile has not cured.
Aging (no turning): raw manure must be worked into the soil, not left on the surface, and then held before harvest — 120 days for crops whose edible part touches the soil (root and leafy crops), 90 days for crops held off the ground (tomatoes, corn). Many keepers stockpile winter coop cleanings and apply to empty fall beds, well ahead of spring planting.
Deep litter method and compost production
The deep litter method keeps birds on a thickening layer of bedding (typically pine shavings) that is allowed to build up for months before a full cleanout. The bedding absorbs and partially composts the manure in place. When cleaned out, this pre-composted material is richer than fresh manure alone and breaks down faster in a compost pile. Many keepers do one deep cleanout per year (typically spring) and use the material directly on garden beds for fall planting preparation.
Garden application rates
Finished compost: apply 1 to 2 inches as a top dressing or work into the top 6 inches of soil. That works out to roughly 3 to 5 ounces per square foot, or 20 to 30 pounds per 100 square feet. For vegetable beds, 1 inch applied annually maintains fertility for most soils.
The calculator above uses the 1-inch standard. If you have sandy or depleted soil, use the 2-inch figure and halve the coverage estimate. Heavy feeders like tomatoes and corn handle the higher rate; leafy greens do better with the lighter one.
Never apply fresh or under-composted chicken manure within 120 days of harvesting crops whose edible part contacts the soil (root crops, leafy greens, low squash), or within 90 days for crops held off the ground (tomatoes, pole beans, sweet corn) — and always work raw manure into the soil rather than leaving it on the surface. This is the USDA National Organic Program food-safety standard, not just a plant-health issue.
Common mistakes
- Applying fresh manure to growing vegetables. Burns plants immediately and creates food safety risk.
- Not hot-composting before applying to root vegetables. Root crops in contact with under-composted manure are a Salmonella risk.
- Letting the compost pile dry out completely. Moisture is needed for decomposition — the pile should feel like a wrung-out sponge.
- Piling manure against the coop wall. Moisture and ammonia accumulation damages the structure over time.
- Ignoring the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio. Pure manure is too nitrogen-heavy. Mixing with equal parts carbon material (dried leaves, straw, cardboard) produces better compost.
- Using straw or hay bedding from an unknown source. Persistent broadleaf herbicides (aminopyralid, clopyralid) can pass through an animal’s gut and survive the compost pile, then stunt or deform tomatoes, beans, and lettuce. If you buy straw, hay, or manure, ask whether the field was sprayed (UNH Extension).

Some figures here are our own. The 2.5 oz/day per-bird manure figure is ours and sits at the low end of a wide published range: Ohio State puts a chicken near 8 lb/month (~4.2 oz/day), while UGA’s 0.5-lb-per-lb-of-feed ratio applied to a hen eating about a quarter pound of feed gives roughly 2 oz/day — ours is between them, nearer the bottom. The bedding multipliers, the 40% compost-yield factor, the 2.5× nitrogen-concentration factor, and the 27 lb per 100 sq ft application figure are also ours. The NPK figures (composted chicken 3-2-2, fresh 1.1-0.8-0.5) are widely cited but vary by source — Ohio State, for example, gives fresh chicken manure closer to 1.5% nitrogen — so treat them as approximate. The nitrogen total is the manure’s own nitrogen (bedding adds bulk, not nitrogen) and is a ceiling: real piles lose some to ammonia.
